Popular culture (or pop culture) can be deemed as what is popular within social context or that of which is most strongly represented by what is perceived to be popularly accepted among society.
I think about the term ‘pop culture’ quite a bit these days because I’ve come to realize that almost everything promoted in my face is the result of some moron finding a way to package, control, exploit, and eventually water down an idea that was probably original at one time. I understand that daily life has always come down to the sensation, profit, and hype factor, but I’m truly amazed at how popular ideas continue to have such little value, substance, originality, or benefit to society. We already accept some level of dishonesty when buying into any idea these days, but I often feel like we’re being sold complete garbage from the very minds that claim to be brilliant pioneers of our time. On second thought, I’m absolutely positive that we’re being sold garbage. So why do we keep buying it? Well, I have a big ego, but not one big enough to think I could answer that question by myself. However, I’m also fascinated at how popular it is for the mainstream media to pretend that everyone is so down to earth, quality-of-life focused, and humanitarian, when all they really care about is ratings, toys, and more profit for less effort.
I must say that I don’t think popular culture was always a bad element, I just believe it is a declining element. As much as I dislike bubble gum music, standard issue ideas, and repetitive movie formulas, I do accept this truth. Similar to the air we breathe, popular culture must exist and that is the reality. Why must it exist? I think it is simple. There are countless categories that people can group themselves into, but there will always be the major consensus group of ideas that are simply ‘available’ and easy to understand. In short, we often accept being common people who can’t think for ourselves, so we don’t question popular ideas or products, we simply trust them because others do. We don’t know where the idea was originated or how solid it actually is, and we really don’t care. We don’t know why a certain piece of “art”or music is popular, we simply accept it because it is there.
Do we need more strangers telling us what we should to listen to on the radio, or what we need to view as the important topics in life? Until you hear the command from your trusted popular media outlet, you will probably never listen anyway.
