My brothers and sisters who are living and breathing with me at this moment, or those reading this after I’m gone; I beg you to stop relying on the ‘industry’ to get your bottom line results. I have three letters for you: D.I.Y…..Do It Yourself. The days of being good at only one or two things is over ( and becoming more obsolete every day). You can’t simply be skilled in one area, then rely on some other ‘genius’ to support you when problems arise. Not that we don’t need help or that we should spread ourselves thin to learn everything. But as an example, at some of my previous jobs, I used to ignore learning basic technological fundamentals with computers and functionality, which resulted in me relying on “technical support” to help me. Well instead of helping at all, they only suggested the sound advice of “turning off and on” an given electronic device and claimed that it was the best way to fix anything. My point is that you need to start broadening your knowledge and horizons. Wake up and realize that there are a lot of people out there who claim to be experts and are really just wasting our time. And on the other hand, there are a lot of experts who are good at several things, and if you don’t start catching up with them, you will end up relying on them! I don’t know about you, but I’m a grown-up now and I don’t care to have others determine the how and when things get done for me (not to say I know everything, but I am open to learn).
The good thing is that for me, realizing that I should learn more things for myself was a blessing in disguise as it pushed me to stop begging for help and start learning how to truly help myself. Start doing things myself, start reading things for myself! Which again brings me to the point of this lame posting….is that I think many great things come from doing things yourself. It does not hurt to simply attempt to figure things out on your own and discover functions through self experience. You can obviously read books, online publications, build solid relationships with mentors, or simply ask a lot of questions. It is always a good idea to position people around you that are experts on many levels and try to gain some knowledge from them so that you can further achieve your goals and simply increase your value as an individual.
It is about being balanced, well-rounded, head strong, and good at more than simply one skill. This can be applied to just about everything in life, but especially for those who seek more in life than simply routine and reliance on others just to function. In response to my idea, I hear the scoffing response of “You may be a jack of all trades, but a master of none”. However, I have yet to meet anyone who has mastered anything in the first place. I believe the second that someone can take a lifetime master one special thing, but when the particular skill is revolutionized to require additional skills, then what? Did you take time to learn other things for yourself and grasp other fundamentals?
In my humble opinion, I think it is a great idea to figure out how some things work on your own and try hard to make things happen even if you don’t get immediate results. Throwing money at the problem for some “expert” to help you is not always the answer. Unfortunately, that is probably why my site and music production is garbage. Ha-ha.
On a creative level, I personally believe that some of the best films, music, and art was created out of a person simply DOING IT without the industry or “marketing” filter. Classic and epic peices often came from not asking for permission, not doing it the accepted method or asking questions, but by doing it themselves with what they already had.
Popular culture (or pop culture) can be deemed as what is popular within social context or that of which is most strongly represented by what is perceived to be popularly accepted among society.
I think about the term ‘pop culture’ quite a bit these days because I’ve come to realize that almost everything promoted in my face is the result of some moron finding a way to package, control, exploit, and eventually water down an idea that was probably original at one time. I understand that daily life has always come down to the sensation, profit, and hype factor, but I’m truly amazed at how popular ideas continue to have such little value, substance, originality, or benefit to society. We already accept some level of dishonesty when buying into any idea these days, but I often feel like we’re being sold complete garbage from the very minds that claim to be brilliant pioneers of our time. On second thought, I’m absolutely positive that we’re being sold garbage. So why do we keep buying it? Well, I have a big ego, but not one big enough to think I could answer that question by myself. However, I’m also fascinated at how popular it is for the mainstream media to pretend that everyone is so down to earth, quality-of-life focused, and humanitarian, when all they really care about is ratings, toys, and more profit for less effort.
I must say that I don’t think popular culture was always a bad element, I just believe it is a declining element. As much as I dislike bubble gum music, standard issue ideas, and repetitive movie formulas, I do accept this truth. Similar to the air we breathe, popular culture must exist and that is the reality. Why must it exist? I think it is simple. There are countless categories that people can group themselves into, but there will always be the major consensus group of ideas that are simply ‘available’ and easy to understand. In short, we often accept being common people who can’t think for ourselves, so we don’t question popular ideas or products, we simply trust them because others do. We don’t know where the idea was originated or how solid it actually is, and we really don’t care. We don’t know why a certain piece of “art”or music is popular, we simply accept it because it is there.
Do we need more strangers telling us what we should to listen to on the radio, or what we need to view as the important topics in life? Until you hear the command from your trusted popular media outlet, you will probably never listen anyway.
I get sick of myself trying to edit and perfect these stupid postings as if it really matters, so I’m trying to think less and just post my ideas. Anyways, anyways…with that being said, here is the latest video I found that I think is just brilliant. This is a ‘demo’ rap video of a solo-rapper who calls himself “The Average Homeboy” (AKA Denny Blaze), and he produced his own songs and video sometime in the 80’s, then submitted it into several record labels and music networks, and was ignored, then over 20 years later, some intern cleaning out boxes comes across the demo video and posted it online a few years ago. The best thing about this video is that the guy is dead serious. I seriously wish I’d made something like this back in the 80’s (as if I am so old)! But it is pure comedy gold and I like the music, no joke. It’s sad that the music production is better than mine and he probably made it with MS-DOS and an old school Casio keyboard. If anyone knows this guy, tell him I want an interview. Later Cronies.
