Anti-Missile Systems Being Tested on Commercial Planes

I had originally come across this story at the beginning of 2008 and had a difficult time finding information on it again, but there have been press releases stating that the Department of Homeland Security recently signed a 29-million dollar contract with BAE systems to start testing anti-missile devices on commercial planes. Yes that’s correct, I said commercial planes. Unfortunately the same type of commercial airlines that get fined for not being able to fix a few cracks on a plane, but we will not discuss that topic right now. Apparently, the device (attached to the plane) works by detecting incoming heat-seeking missiles approaching the aircraft, and then emits a laser to divert the missile. I found this news extremely interesting, but can’t make any positive or negative comments on the idea since there seem to be so few facts available on the actual progress. However, I must say that I would pay money to see the faces on the first passengers who sign up to board those first 3 planes that are set to test the technology sometime this spring (2008). I assume that the first passengers on these planes equipped with these devices would rather they not call them “test runs”, but come to think of it, if you give me a discount on the airfare, I would sign up to be on the first flight for sure!
