Overpaid Athletes
Many icons I looked up to as a child were professional athletes (like Michael Jordan), but can we all agree that the salaries being throw around these days are just a bit over the top? For example, several years ago, the well-known baseball star Derek Jeter was said to be getting over 25 million a year. 25 MILLION? A year? Are you kidding me? Even if it was 10 million it would be too much in my opinion. I am one to go out on a limb and say that this is just slightly ridiculous, wouldn’t you?
We claim that teachers and professors deserve only a modest wage, but deem that successful sports stars deserve the budget of a small country. Why? And for goodness sakes, when is enough enough? Something is off here. I’m not saying that organizations or sponsors should not be free to pay a high wage, but I’m suggesting that if you are lucky enough to be in this exclusive group of highly paid athletes, at least you could stop complaining about ANYTHING or going on a strike every time something doesn’t go your way. The public is naive, but is finding it harder to support these superstars, especially when they start throwing in the steroid charges, illegal dog fighting, and reality tv style drama into the mix. I realize that these guys work extremely hard, have amazing skills, and go through a lot to get where they are, but I’m sick and tired of seeing overpaid athletes whining and complaining.
My request is that these overpaid, self indulgent sports celebrities just take a deep breath, relax, and film another episode of “MTV Cribs”, then get back to playing the sport that they claim to love so much. Every players strike and complaint I see, simply makes me care even less about professional athletes, their teams, and even the sport itself. To be quite honest, I would rather watch a t-ball game that involves kids playing with passion, rather than watch over weight, over paid, drugged up, MLB players. I can only hope that someone will turn things around and revive some of these major league sports. There are a lot of humble and level-headed athletes out there that really do what they love, so I hope they will lead the way and stop the whining babies from hijacking the sport. For those athletes who want to spend time with steroids, cars, television coverage, and gossip, I suggest that they get into the film business.
